Solutions to Connect Your Laptop to the Wifi
Let’s look at the fixes in the following list. Just remember, if a solution doesn’t seem to work, move on to the next one.
Solution 1: Check the Wifi connection
Click on the “no internet connection” icon and make sure the Wifi is turned ON. Also, ensure that the Airplane Mode is turned OFF and if your laptop has a physical Wifi button make sure it is turned ON.
Solution 2: Reconnect to the Wifi
If your laptop is connected to the Wifi network but the internet is not working, click on the Wifi name and disconnect. Connect to the same network again and try using the internet.
Solution 3: Restart the modem/router
Turn OFF the router and take out every cable from your router. Now, wait for at least 30 seconds. Reconnect the wires and plug IN the router and connect to the Wifi. If the router doesn’t turn ON, press the Power button.
Solution 4: Restart the laptop
Sometimes using the laptop for too long makes it wont to connect to the Wifi. In that case, simply restart your computer. This will allow it to remove its cache files and help with a soft reset.
Solution 5: Run the Network Troubleshooter
Through the Start menu go to the Settings. In settings, search for Troubleshoot. Among the list, find “Others”, click on Network Adapter and run it. Follow along with the steps given by the troubleshooter.
Solution 6: Update the Wifi driver
Click your Window key and search for the Device Manager. Double click the Network Adapters option from the list. Right-click to see the options for your Wifi driver. You may have to do one of three things in this order:
Update it. If it shows that the driver is completely up to date, then disable and enable it. Finally, if that doesn’t work uninstall the driver and reinstall it from the Microsoft drive library.
Solution 7: Renew Your IP Address
Press down the window key and then press R to open Run. Type the words CMD into the search line and click Enter. In the terminal window type “ipconfig /release” and enter. After this command is finished put in “ipconfig /renew” and click Enter. Connect to the Wifi to see if it worked or not.
Solution 8: Turn OFF Your Antivirus Temporarily
Sometimes a third-party antivirus can cause the Wifi to be blocked. Temporarily turn OFF the antivirus and try reconnecting to the Wifi. Turning the antivirus OFF for a few minutes does not cause any harm to the machine. If the internet starts working and the issue lies with the antivirus, search for a way to allow your Wifi through the Firewall.
Solution 9: Connect to the Alternate Frequency
Wifi comes in frequencies 2.4 GHz and 5 GHz. Although the 5GHz connection is faster, some laptops are not equipped for it. Try connecting to the 2.4 GHz Wifi. The change in frequency will not affect your work significantly.
Why does my Wifi icon refuse to connect?
Your laptop may have a physical button for Wifi. Unless it is turned ON, you will be unable to connect to the Wifi.
Where is my Wifi button?
A physical Wifi button is generally a toggle switch on the sides of the laptop. Look at and run your fingers on the edges of the laptop on all four corners. You should be able to see or feel the toggle switch.
I don’t know what a Wifi driver is?
The Wifi driver is a software program installed on your laptop that allows your operating system to communicate to your network adapters.
What does the frequency of the Wifi mean?
The Wifi frequency is available in the name of the Wifi. If your Wifi’s name is “home_Wifi”, your laptop will show it as “home_Wifi_2.4GHz” and “home_Wifi_5GHz”.
